Evening Tea
Despite the animosity between the two houses Minerva McGonagall and Severus Snape were actually quite good friends.
The two were in Minerva’s chambers.
“How does that wretched child manage to the defeat Voldemort year after year and still can’t get past a simple Potions quiz?”
Minerva nodded absently. Used to such tirades she rarely paid attention anymore.
“He breaks rules then flaunts it. He should have been expelled at least 7 times and yet he remains.” After a sip he added with a sneer. “It must be nice to be Dumbledore’s pet.”
“Severus Snape you know full well why Albus allowed such leniency.” Minerva stated matter-of-factly.
Minerva narrowed her eyes. They always had this fight and she was tired of it.
“Harry has a celebrity he has not earned. He had a responsibility that shouldn’t have been his.” Severus’ voice dipped to a low drawl which barely hid his disgust. Whether it was for the former or the latter Minerva could not tell.
“That boy was allowed to get away with murder!” That last statement was said in such a deliberately accusing tone that left no hint as to what he was referring to.
Minerva had enough. It was time to settle this.
“Severus Snape may I inquire why you care so much?”
Severus’ hand paused midway between the table and his mouth. “What are you getting at?” The menace in his voice was barely audible.
Minerva ignored the implied threat and asked the question again.
Severus sneered. “I have no idea what you mean.”
“Why is Harry first and last on your mind?” Minerva pointed accusingly at Severus.
“Minerva, I seriously doubt you are suffering from senility even at this age.”
“Just answer the question.” Minerva growled. Insulted he would sink so low to insult her age. It was more proof she was on the right track.
“Maybe it’s true. Your usual sharp faculties are dulling a bit.” Severus intoned. He was being insultingly polite.
“Stop this useless caviling and be honest with at least yourself.” Severus tried to interrupt. Minerva held up a hand to halt his next verbal attack. “You want that boy so much I can see it!”
For once Severus Snape was speechless.
Minerva continued. “You see that boy full of life and hope; despite what he’s been thru and you want it so bad you can taste it.”
Severus still had not spoken or even attempted to move.
“You would follow that boy into Hell and beyond if it meant being near his warmth. If he weren’t a student I’d tell you to bed him and be done with it!”
By this time Severus was on his feet. “How dare you.”
Minerva stood up and got in his face. “I Do Dare!”
The two stared at each other in silence. Then Severus turned and walked to the door. His hand paused on the handle as he heard Minerva’s last comment.
“It would be a good match . . . graduation is one week away.”
